How to Outsmart a Burglar

 

In our previous blog post, we presented a few important facts and statistics about burglaries. It’s helpful to keep these facts and statistics in mind when finding ways to outsmart a burglar.

 

Last week, we mentioned how burglars tend to strike between the hours of 10am and 3pm because people are least likely to be home. Therefore, the more occupied your home looks, the less likely a burglar will try to break into it:

Children love Halloween; they get to dress up and eat candy, what else could a child ask for in a holiday?! Although its fun, all of the added excitement can cause a child to forget about safety. Here are a few important pieces of information to keep in mind this Halloween season:

  • Motorists need to be particularly alert! Masks may impair a child’s ability to see traffic, so be mindful of children who may dart from between parked cars or who are walking on roadways. At twilight and later in the evening, watch out for children in dark clothing.

A home invasion is when robbers force their way into an occupied home, apartment or hotel room to commit a robbery or other crime. The entry point of attack is often through the front door, garage or unlocked window. It is very important for the occupant to not automatically open the front door before asking who is there. Beware of Door Knockers! Who’s Really Knocking on Your Door?

The scenario goes something like this – You get a knock on your door and a salesman claiming to represent a home alarm company gives you one of these pitches:

  • Your current alarm company has gone out of business and he’s there to transfer your account to the organization he represents.
  • He represents your current alarm company and just needs to update your equipment.
  • If you don’t have an alarm, he’s willing to immediately install one and put a sign in your yard if you sign a long-term contract on the spot.
The salesman could be legitimate, but he may very well be trying to scam you. He may even be part of a ring of burglars out monitoring and targeting your neighborhood.
